If it was possible that children could, at any age, complete a chore without the parent needing to follow behind and re-do it... then I would be a chore-assigning maniac! Since that is not the case, Ava has been chore free... until now! We decided that she needed a chore that was specifically hers to do, and something easily accomplished by her, but not to be repeated by me! Enter the TV, and the fingerprints that constantly reside there! And who better to clean off the fingerprints, than the little person that put them there! (Although, Ava will argue that it was "Snook" a character from the PBS kids show "A Big, Big World." At the end of every show he puts his big sloth-paw on the screen as part of the ending song.)
So far, the chore has gone over pretty well, and she even points out the fingerprints and asks to clean them off! (I wonder how long that will last?!) Every time she cleans the TV she gets $.10 (you have to start low to account for inflation!) We then take the money to her piggy bank, put a penny in the tithing envelope, and voila! we have a chore-doing 3 year old! She also volunteers to vaccuum any messes she has made on the floor, or will ramndomly get out the vaccuum because "she needs to," which is fine with me. She actually does a pretty decent job!
