I seem to be about a month behind on everything that happens. The 1st weekend in August was the annual Buckaroo Rodeo. We had been camping with Grandma & Grandpa for the few days before. We got home early Saturday afternoon, but then had to race to get things unloaded, get us fed & get to the rodeo early for a decent seat. We got the other things taken care of, but missed out on the good seat (like there really is a "good" one there anyway!) I wouldn't say the bleachers were packed since many a space was being taken up by someones blanket they were using as a saving device, but there ended up being no place for us. Grandpa & Dad made a quick trip back to the house for the camp chairs so we could at least sit & not stand the entire time. We squeezed them in the best we could, but didn't get much of a prime rodeo-watching spot.
Emma was up first on the event she chose - Stick Pony Race. She was ready with our trusty stick-pony unicorn & Jacob's old chaps, but when her turn rolled around there was no stick-pony racing happening for her. She turned shy & didn't want to do it & there was no talking her into it. We blamed it on the lack of sleep during camping & the already long day beforehand. The announcers kept telling me to go with her (which incidentally didn't coerce her either), but that definitely would have been a sight for everyone else to watch - a pregnant mom with a stick horse in one hand & a sad 4 yr. old in the other, loping through the thick dirt in shoes not made for rodeo of any sort!! Yeah right announcers!
Emma's other event was the Chicken Scramble that she was adamant in doing, although I had my doubts. We stuck it out till the end just to give her the chance. She chased a few chickens & was pretty close to a couple. Then, as usually happens, one of the chicken-chasing helpers caught her a chicken! When she went to hold it, it gave a few wing flaps & that was the end of that. Someone had to hold the chicken & someone else had to hold Emma!
Ava was excited to be old enough for the Barrel Racing event this year. Not really "racing" more like barrel "circling..." slowly! With so many participants this year they had 2 horses going at the same time. Ava was able to ride "Elmo," the horse that is there every year, & this year he was all decorated! She did a great job guiding the horse on her own, especially since that's not something she's ever done.
We were tempted to be done with the Buckaroo Rodeo in future years, but next year is the 50th anniversary & what a fun thing for the kids to say they participated in. So... until next year buckaroos!
